Alan Coates
Alan Stuart Coates (born 27 June 1943) is an Australian professor of clinical oncology, medical researcher and administrator. He was the inaugural CEO of the Cancer Council Australia (1998 – 2006), former president of the Clinical Oncological Society of Australia (COSA), and co-chair of the St. Gallen International Breast Cancer Conference. He was also the first non-American to be elected to the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. == Medical training and practice == Coates graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1966 with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and trained in internal medicine and immunology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research in Australia, then at the Wisconsin Clinical Cancer Center in the United States. He returned to Australia in 1978 and for 25 years was a medical oncologist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. In 1985, he was appointed Associate Professor in Cancer Medicine in the University of Sydney. Since 1998 he has been a Clinical Professor at that university in the School of Public Health.〔 He is an accredited statistician (AStat) with the Statistical Society of Australia and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP).〔
